Jesus is the Light of the World


DR. WILLIAM E. HAMILTON The day dawned for our Pastor February 17th 1939 in Talladega, Alabama. Being of humble parentage he was educated in public schools there.

After moving to Birmingham, Alabama he became a diligent worker at the 25th Avenue Baptist Church and at the Evergreen Baptist Church. Being licensed to preach at 14, he received a scholarship from his church (Evergreen Baptist) to attend Eastern School of Theology. With the support of his English teacher/friend Mrs. Helen C. George Heath, he attended the Carver Bible Institute in Atlanta, Georgia. His career began at the age of seven singing.

In 1956, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to live and further his education at Bowie State College. He along with six other young people formed the Hamilton Choraliers, who were managed by the late Rev. Mary Hodges Johnson. He along with Mr. A. Canton Freeman formed a popular duet, sponsored by the celebrated first Negro woman on radio, the late Mrs. Mary Dee. His singing career has carried him with the great of that profession.

While living in New York he had the opportunity to appear at the renowned Apollo Theatre. In New York he served as Pianist for the Saint John Baptist Church in lnwood, New York and the First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway, New York.

Upon returning to Baltimore, he organized the Hiram E. Smith Choir of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, his second choir, his first being the P. A. Hodges Chorus of Saint Paul Freewill Baptist Church.

He has sang with the Floyd Leggins Singers, The Baltimore Echoes, the Gillis Memorial C. C. Church Radio Choir, the Intermediate Choir of Gillis, Mount Calvary Holy Church Radio Choir and many others. He has served as pianist for the Mt. Calvary F. W. Baptist Church, Gospel Chorus of New Shiloh Baptist Church and the Vashti Gospel Singers.

He was ordained at the age of 19, and was recognized by the local and national presses as the youngest ordained minister in Maryland. His artistry in the floral world was nourished by Mr. Carl Norwood and his wife, the late Sarah Norwoood, of Summers/Norwood Florists, Mrs. Loretta 0. Valentine, and Miss Mary F. Burns.

In 1963 he married one of his proteges in Gospel Music. Out of this union came two daughters, Delores and Mai. He is also a proud grandfather of Terrance and shares this love with his adopted son~ Nephew Marvin. On June 12th, 1990, Dr. Hamilton celebrated 24 years of service. He is a memberof Cornerstone and shares the love and concern of Dr. Kearse as a son.

He serves as President of the Men's Department of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ and as a Board Member. He was honored in 1979 with an Honorary Doctor,s Degree. Dr. Hamilton's achievements are too numerous to name, and we are certain the future holds no depths, for God is not through with him yet.
