Sister Dorothy M. Styles was born January 6,1916 in Kansas City, Missouri to Jim and Viola Thompson. When her mother and father passed, she went to live with her grandparents, George and Laura Harrison in Kansas City, KS, where she received her early education.
In 1934 she married Vernon L. Smith. To this union one daughter was born.
On January 11, 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage to Lucius Styles
She professed her belief in Christ at an early age in Kansas City, KS under Rev. Leona McGee. She was baptized in Big Eleven Lake in Kansas City, KS. She gave solo recitals and sang with Katherine McClooney and Bro. Joe Riggins. She later joined Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ, where she has given outstanding service and dedication for over 40 years. She was a member of the Young Women's Board under Sis. Wanda Bolton, secretary of the Community Workers Board, member of the Missionary Board, and president of the Federated Board for over 30 years, appointed by Rev. Henri Lawson. She was the national president of the Missionary Workshop of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ, Inc.
She worked for East Area Community Coalition four years. She was the president of the 36th, 37th Montgall Block Club, and member of the Patient's Advisory Committee of T.M.C.
She departed this life May 11, 1990 at Menorah Medical Center.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband, Lucius; her daughter, Delores; a cousin, Win. Russell Thornton; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Nathaniel and Flare Brown of Atlantic City, NJ, Vein Ray and Shanise Brown; five great-grandchildren, Nathaniel IV, Candace, Shakiera and Vein Jr. and Devin L. Sanders; sisters-in-law, Annie V. Ross and Hattie Smith; step-daughters, Loistine Fleming and Addie Marie; adopted family, Donald Williams, Helen Louise Saxton Heger; other Metropolitan children; sisters, Earnestine Lucas and Katherine King; other relatives and a multitude of friends.
