Words of Reflection

Calvin E. Phillips was born in Selma, Alabama. His parents were Calvin E. Phillips, Sr. and Asalene Phillips.

He received his education in Birmingham, Alabama, and traveled through that area as a salesman.

On May 4, 1939 he and the former Mattie Lucas were united in holy matrimony.

In 1940, he came to Kansas City to attend memorial services for his father. While here, Bishop Taylor asked him if it had been revealed to him that God had called him to the ministry. He ignored the calling but later in life God blessed him and brought it to past.

In 1947 the Phillips visited here again and Rev. Boswell, his uncle, asked him to move here and they did. Rev. William Hurse, Rev. Henri Lawson and Sister Alberta Johnson were all a great help to him in studying the ministry but his uncle, Rev. Boswell revealed to him much of his ministerial studies after he had made his transitory change.

Bro. Phillips was accepted and approved by the national body of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ, Inc., and was ordained by the international president, Rev. Clarence. H. Cobbs, and its body of ministers. As the fifth pastor, Rev. Phillips, pastored at Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ from 1971 to 1976.

After leaving, he founded and pastored, The Universal Spiritual Church of Jesus Christ, Located at 3838 Van Brunt, Kansas City, MO. There is a deep devotion and a spiritual bond that exits between the Universal Spiritual Church of Jesus Christ and the Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ. For there is only one Lord, one Faith, and one Baptism, one God and Father of us all.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Rev. Phillips served on many councils, mayoral appointments, NAACP, the Non- Denominational Ministers Union, and was active in many community developments.

From 1954 until 1975, Rev. Phillips was a Sales Representative for Watkins Brothers Memorial Chapel where he was the top sales representative. He was responsible for selling thousands of T.B. Watkins Pre-Need Memorial Plans to residents of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.

He served on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS EMERITUS of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ, Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Phillips; children, Angela Mitchell, Kim Nickerson, and Michael Pierce, all of Kansas City; daughter Calvalene Burnett of Birmingham, AL; niece and nephew, Rose McKeithen and Clinton McKeithen of Kansas City; a host of grandchildren, grand nieces, nephews, and church family members.
