Words of Reflection
Rev. Sarah Jane Patton was born May 21, 1903 in Atchison, Kansas to the union
of Peter Lee and Clearanda Lyles Lee. She was the ninth of twelve children.
She made her transitory journey January 14, 1988 at Menorah Medical Center.
She received her education in Atchison and Bethel. Kansas.
She was united in marriage in 1924 to Leroy Porter and from this union a
daughter was born. She later married Leroy Patton in 1950. Mr. Patton preceded her in death in 1980.
Mother Patton chose the Lord as her personal saviour at an early age (16) at
the Oakridge Baptist Church, Bethel, KS. She later joined First Spiritual
Temple of Kansas City, KS under the pastorate of Mother Pearl Sutton, who
later ordained her as a minister of the gospel in 1935. Reverend Patton
pastored her own church in Leavenworth. KS. for several years where she
met Bishop William F. Taylor. who had attended several of her services.
Mother Patton resigned her pastorship and joined the Metropolitan Spiritual
Church of Christ in 1940. She served as vice president of the Healers Board
from 1945-1950. She was appointed president of the Ministers & Evangelist
Board in 1950 and served as the president until her untimely homegoing.
Mother Patton was appointed as assistant pastor by the late Rev. Clarence
Cobb in 1975 at the National Congress of Metropolitan Spiritual Church of
Christ. Inc. She served her charges well in each and every duty assigned to her.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving family: daughter. Mary Payne;
three grandchildren, Anthony, Adrian and Sarah Payne; two great-grandchildren,
Mary Campbell and Adrian Payne Jr., all of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Marshall
Lee; a sister. Bertha Gibson, both of Leavenworth, KS; a host of nephews,
nieces, six stepchildren, Leroy Patton, Portland, OR, Jesse Patton, Gary, IN,
John Patton, New York, Jerry Patton, Philadelphia, PA., Patricia Patton,
Denver, CO and Antoinette Patton, Gary, IN.; several step-grandchildren;
special friends. Mr. and Mrs. Scott; other relatives and many, many, many friends.
