She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Prov 31:26-31

Words of Reflection

Usually a mere reminiscence of dates and the times gone by is an appropriate measure of one's life, but for Reverend Lena Mitchell, the real importance is how she lived.

Mother Mitchell, as she was fondly called by everyone who knew her, lived a full life by loving, caring and giving of herself.

She was born, August 6, 1891 in Osage City, Kansas, the youngest of fourteen children born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Holmes. She came to Kansas City as a young lady to live with a sister.

She received Christ as her Savior and was baptized by the late, Rev. D. A. Holmes at Vine Street Baptist Church, now Paseo Baptist Church. In 1925 she moved her membership to the Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ, under the pastorate of the late Rev. William F. Taylor and Elder L.L. Boswell. She was a member of the choir and was the first drummer (a God given talent ) of the church.

After nineteen years of dedicated service at Metropolitan, Mother Mitchell stepped out on God's promise that, “He would never leave you alone”. She organized the, ”Sweet Hour Of Prayer” prayer band; going to hospitals, homes and whatever there was a need. The prayer band grew into a mission and moved to 2029 Troost, March 20, 1945. After ordination by Bishop T. B. Watson, the mission became, The Sweet Hour of Prayer Spiritual Temple: growing and prospering for thirty-nine years under the guidance of the founder and pastor still proclaiming, “Jesus is the Light of the World”.

In 1984, she returned to Metropolitan Spiritual Church Of Christ and served as a member of the Ministers' Board.

She was Chaplin of the St. Andrew Grand lodge and the Naomi Chapter 19 and Argie Ma Bel, Chapter 26, order of the eastern star.

She leaves to mourn, one nephew, Charles Love, Kansas City, KS; two nieces, Ruth McField, Kansas City, KS and Bea Anderson, Topeka, KS; other relatives and those whose lives she has touched.

What Will Your Record Be?

At the end of your journey; What will your record be?
When you come to the end of your journey ,and your saviors face you see,
Jam wondering, yes I wonder what will your record be?
You may pretend you 're living right, you may smile and look so gay,
But your record only depends on how you live day by day.
Every good deed you do; every bad one too; you 'ye got to give an
Account when the good Lord calls your name.
You may Dress and robe all down, in this big world you see,
But when you stand your test in judgeinent, My; my;
What will your record be?
Some people in this world let their minds be too high,
they ignore the blind, the lame as they go passing by.
They Never go in a sick room, to visit and help someone in need,
But I wonder, yes I wonder, what will their record be?
The Bible says we should visit the sick, we should do this day by day,
We should visit the widow 's and orphans and don 't drive the blind away.
Some people pick the color of races, when it comes to help, you see,
Lord, I wonder, yes I wonder, what will your record be?
Some say they've got good religion and think they're living right,
They won't go to church on a Sunday, but will party all 'Saturday night.
They save all their nickles and dimes for the church, that you really know;
But when they go to a cabaret or picture show, they find their green back roll.
Some don 't believe in helping the pastor, regardless to where they go,
They'd rather stay home at night and hear a sermon on radio.
What will your record be?
