Jean Mary Garrett, 87, was born August 31, 1923, in Kansas City, Kansas to William Dallas Hayes and Laura C. Ross. She was the eldest of eight children; four boys and three girls. Her parents; one son, William Fine, two brothers, William D. Hayes, Jr. and Norman Hayes; one sister, Dorothy Rhodes and her husband, Calvin Garrett all preceded her in death.

She accepted Christ at an early age at the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Argentine, KS and later united with Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ, under the leadership of Bishop James D. Tindall. Rev. Garrett was ordained to the ministry and served on the healer board as well as the mother's board.

Jean was active in numerous civic organizations including the voting process, where she serve as the election judge. For over nineteen years, she worked for the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries at the Harold Thomas Center as a clerk until she retired.

After retirement, she continued to minister at different churches. She was a living testimony to her faith and to God. Jean never saw anyone negatively but always acknowledged the good in them. She was a joy to be around whether she was speaking the word or telling those who would listen, "God loves you and so do I".
Rev. Garrett departed this life on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Truman Medical Center. She will be truly missed.

She leaves to mourn her passing: one sister, Doris Coe; twins, Edwin Hayes (Arlene), Los Angeles, CA and Edna Barbee; special niece, Janet Rhodes (lovingly known as Jean's little foot soldier); two grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a host of other nephews, nieces, other relatives, church family and friends.
