Services for Mrs. Lewis were held Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at 12 p.m. at Harvest church, 4300 N. Corrington, Kansas City, MO, with Steve loupe, Pastor, officiating. Ozella W. (Charles) Lewis was born Feb. 2, 1944, to Odessa Scercy and Robert Charles in Kansas City, MO. Both parents preceded her in death.
She received her early education in the Kansas City, MO. public school system. She attended Garrison, Charles Sumner Douglass, Bruce and Kensngton Elemntary Schools. She graduated from East High School
Upon the death of her mother, She took on the task of helping to rear her younger siblings. She assisted the family by cooking, washing, ironing, combing hair, disciplining and making sure the house was always clean, while continuing to get her education
After graduation, She held various jobs to ensure that the family had enough finances to sustain them. Her sacrifices for her family continued throughout her adult life, often spreading to anyone in need. She worked at Katz drug store., the internal Revenue Service, General Services Administration and Gates Bar-B-Q, and eventually was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, where she worked until she became ill
She met and married Charles Lewis in 1970
She was an avid seamstress and loved making all kinds of crafts. She became a top salesperson with "Personal Preference Art" and was in the process of helping develop a fanny endeavor, "B-loved Creations."
She professed Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was baptized at Friendship Baptist Church in the early 1950's. She later changed her membership to Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ. There she served on the Usher board. She later joined Harvest church, where she served as an active member of "Cornerstones" and as a greeter until her death. A high point in her life was the opportunity to visit Israel
She leaves her husband, Charles Lewis; two daughters, Robin Dayton (Michael), and Dana Hughes (Mark); six sisters, Lucille Williams, Dona Elmore and Lura Pollard, all of Higginsville, MO., and Linda Byrd, Rita Robinson(Howard) and Rosemary Smith (Anthony), all of Kansas City, MO.; three brothers, Robert Scercy (Charlesetta, Tuson, AZ, and Dr. Michael Charles and victor Charles, both of Kansas City, MO; three special nephews she reared as her sons, James Byrd (Angel), Aaron Byrd and Allen Byrd, all of Kansas City, MO; four granddaughters, Brittany Dayton, Bre'Anna Dayton, BayLeigh Dayton and Mariah Hughes; adopted family members; nieces and nephews; cousins; friends; and church members
