Obituary

"Approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams" -Thanatopsis

Mrs. Katherine Kyles was born on June 14, 1903 in New Franklin, Missouri. She departed this life on January 19,1986 at theTimberlake Care Center. Katherine was the daughter of Allie Jackson Graves and Andrew Graves. Four brothers, her parents and one sister preceded her in death. She was a long time member of the Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ. Katherine served on the Community Board.

As a young woman she learned to love music and dance. In her early years she danced with Sammy Davis, Jr., his father and uncle, traveling all over the United States.

After coming to Kansas City she married the late George Kyles who passed eleven years ago. Prior to her retirement, Katherine worked for over 30 years at the Gas Service Company as an assistant in food preparation for Ms. Helen Mandigo and Miss Janita Luth; cooking was one of her hobbies. She loved to prepare attractive dishes and eat the best food.

Upon retirement, Katherine spent her time caring for her plants and preparing food. During the last three years of her life her health began to fail. In June of 1985 she had surgery and never fully recovered. Her dimples and broad smile, soft voice and kind words made it easy for the doctors and nurses at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Swope Ridge Nursing Home and Timberlake Care Center to care for her. They all loved and adopted the "sweet old lady."

Katherine has no relatives. She is survived by Inez and Richard Kaiser, who cared for her, and leaves her friends, Ms. Ruth Graves, Ms. Pauline Echols, Mr. Paul McCowan and Ms. Lillie Roberson.
