Sylvia Elaine Houston was born January 29,1927, to the union of Otto Zelmara
Houston (Huston), and Mildred Banks Houston in Kansas City, Jackson County,
Missouri. She attended public school in Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded
in death by her parents, and brother Otto T. Houston (Huston) Jr. Sylvia was
called home to be with her heavenly Father, whom she loved dearly, on February
9,2004, at 10:24 PM at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. Sylvia kept
the faith and fought a good fight. Her life's calling as a Minister of the
Gospel, Evangelist, Musician, Singer and her Ministry of Help today are retired
from as she has joined that Great Number in the Heavenly Realms to forever be
with the Lord.
Sylvia was a Member of Miracle Valley Church, Kansas City, Missouri since June
of 2002, under the Pastorate of John McWhorter. She served faithfully in many
ways until her health began to fail "Miss Sylvia" as she was affectionately known
by the members of the church and others of the community, loved to bless those
whom she cared for. If she identified a need in an individual's life, she
pursued passionately a means of meeting that need. Many Wednesday evenings at
Miracle Valley, she cooked and prepared dinner for the entire church. She loved
to cook and was a cook of distinction and quality. She preferred to work
individually in the kitchen and did not want anyone "looking in her pots and
pans" as she lovingly prepared delicacies enjoyed by all. When members were
sick or shut in, she would help in their care and prepare food for them
individually in their homes or prepare and take to them. She loved to bless
people. Countless hours were dedicated to blessing the family of God everywhere.
Before uniting with Miracle Valley Church, she was a member of Metropolitan
Spiritual Church under the Pastorate of Bishop James D. Tindall.
When employed earlier in life, she worked as a Nurse for Osage Hospital and
Trinity Hospital. She also worked for a period of time as a cook in a school
cafeteria. Pictures in her home reflect and validate her life's calling and
ambitions. She fondly reflected on occasions of preparing food for a school
of 800 students, breakfast and lunch, being the only cook in that setting
and receiving only minimal support from others in the kitchen.
Sylvia lived a full life of accomplishments and successes. She was a graduate
of the Institute of Kansas City, MO., September 1951 with a Certificate of
Licenced Practical Nursing. She lived in California for a number of years.
Sylvia was involved in various civic activities having received Certificates
of Acknowledgment and Appreciation from the former Mayor of Los Angeles,
California, Tom Bradley. On October 26,1973 she was honored to receive
the Meritorious Community Service Award and Mayors Certificate of Appreciation.
Sylvia believed in bettering herself and was constantly reading and pursuing
greater knowledge. She has certificates of Educational Accomplishment in
Sociology and Journalism from the Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
In February of 1972 Sylvia was designated by the Divine Science Organization as
a Singing Evangelist and Licensed her to carry out that calling.
Sylvia loved music and loved to sing. Over the years she blessed many with her
gifts and talents of music. It mattered not if it were persons of high or low
social caliber, her desire was to bless whomsoever. She was awarded Soprano
Soloist in September 1978. Sylvia also received the Certificate of Ordination
and Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree May 12,1981 by the Humanity Research
Center at Beverly Hills, CA. Numerous awards and certificates in various
disciplines of study are witness of her contribution to humanity and Christianity.
Sylvia leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Anne Lois Shepherd Houston, Anna
Maria Smith, Stacha Houston, sisters, Beverly Jean Stewart, Vera Smith, Mary Love
Houston, Lots Drew and Shirley Powell; Christine Alien and Carolyn Robins
(persons Sylvia loved as daughters); Bishop Otto T. Houston III (nephew), Vivian
Houston (sister in-law), Geraldine Hayes (Aunt), Pearl Ross (Sister in-law),
Helen Devance (Cousin), James Banks (Cousin) and a host of relatives and friends.
