Gwendolyn O. Chestnut passed from this life on June 15, 2009 at the age of 76 at Kansas City Hospice House and Palliative Care Center. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri on April 5, 1933 to her late parents Arthur and Ruby Harris. The oldest of 7 children, Gwen was preceded in death by her brothers Gilbert, Robert and Sisters Shirley, Roselyn and Michelle.
A proud graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 51' and Philander Smith University, Gwendolyn was also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She dedicated her life to helping and serving others. She worked for Little Rock School District, Jackson County Welfare, Social Security Administration and United Inner City Services were she served as the Executive Director of Emergency Services.
Gwendolyn loved God and her family. She was a lifetime member of the Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ where she served on most boards of the church at one time or another throughout her life.
She was united in marriage to the late, Edgar Chestnut, and bore two sons, Lonnie and Randal.
The family later moved to Phoenix, AZ where her husband Edgar passed away after a prolonged illness.
A great cook, educator and friend, Gwen would do anything for anyone if she could. She was well respected and loved by many.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Randal (Tamara); sister, Jolene and a brother Jon. Three grandchildren Tracy Millbrooks, Lauren Grace and Madison Delores; one great-grandchild, Terrion. Several nieces Robin Harris, Gwynne Birzer ( Mike) Carla Harris, Sharla Harris, Vivereen Sayles, Geno Sayles, Kim Sayles, Stacy Watson (Marvin), Ricquisha Campbell, Shaunte Banks, Charlene Mitchell, Erica Jones, and Keira Cobbs, Nephews: Tommy Chestnut (Mary Louise) Ronald Harris, Christopher Chestnut, Tony Gilliam and a host of family and friends.
